Recognize the passage and nest together
Sniffer Caves are a generated feature in Mielon’s The Sift. The inspected release builds a curved, descending passage from a surface entrance into a rounded chamber. Healthy Sculk and Dry Healthy Sculk line the carved space, and suitable floor positions become an Overgrown Willow foliage nest. An adjoining chamber contains an Ichor pool.
Use those features together when identifying a cave. A Sniffer standing outdoors does not identify an entrance, and an ordinary underground opening does not establish that you have found this feature. This guide covers Mielon 1.1.2 for Fabric and Minecraft 26.2, file FjiiWlMl. Its generation details come from static inspection of the author’s distributed package, not a gameplay test by this site.
Where to begin searching
The inspected package includes Sniffer Cave generation in these environments:
| Generation group | Biomes containing its feature binding |
|---|---|
| Overgrown | Overgrown Clearing, Overgrown Forest, Overgrown Forest Slopes, Overgrown Peaks and Overgrown Slopes |
| Wastes and peaks | Sift Wastes, Siftslate Peaks, Siftslate Slopes and Ichor Snowy Peaks |
Sift Deep Dark has no Sniffer Cave feature binding in this file. For a first search, the Overgrown Forests guide helps identify one of the listed environments.
Look for accessible surface openings rather than digging toward an advertised universal Y level. The generator starts from surface height, selects candidate locations and checks the surrounding terrain before carving. Being in a listed biome permits the feature; it does not guarantee a cave in every chunk or supply coordinates shared by different worlds.
Complete a first cave visit
- Record the entrance. Note its position and a nearby landmark before following the passage. This is a travel suggestion, not an activation requirement.
- Check the identifying features. Follow the descending route and look for the two sculk materials, foliage nest and pool chamber. Preserve a clear route back to the opening.
- Inspect the nest. Record any eggs, plants and Sniffers actually present. An empty nest is a possible result; do not make finding an egg the only measure of a successful visit.
- Choose observation or collection. If your goal is liquid Ichor, bring a bucket or glass bottles and use the Ichor collection guide. The author documents both containers. Contact with Ichor slows movement slightly while granting Regeneration I.
- Return with a useful result. A recorded cave location and contents, or the liquid you intended to collect, completes this outing. The first-trip guide covers the broader return plan from The Sift.
What the cave can contain
The nest uses Overgrown Willow foliage rather than a chest or a separate crafted nest item. Its contents routine can attempt to place Sniffer Eggs, but it can also select no eggs. Placement still requires an available, suitable spot.
Nest decoration draws from Overgrown Fronds, Overgrown Chard, Overgrown Stalks, Siftslate Stalks, Healthy Sculk Sprouts and Dry Healthy Sculk Sprouts. The cave also attempts to scatter Torchflowers or Pitcher Crops. These are possible generated contents, not a promise that every plant appears or a verified harvesting yield. Use blocks and items for the separate material-use reference.
A nonempty nest schedules two ordinary adult Sniffers, with a chance of a baby. These are cave-specific generation requests, not evidence of a Dark Sniffer guardian. Dark Sniffer infection and behavior belong to a separate mechanic.
Why eggs or Sniffers may be absent
Nest construction needs suitable floor and open space. Egg placement is random. Sniffer generation is deferred until the relevant chunks are ready, requires suitable empty positions without Ichor, and is gated by the mob-spawning game rule. Requests have limited retries. Consequently, the code’s family request does not guarantee that a player will see that family on arrival, or establish continual respawning at the nest.
Source and version
The author description names Sniffer Caves and documents Ichor collection. Cave shape, nest contents, biome bindings and conditional generation were checked in the 1.1.2 Fabric 26.2 release on October 2, 2026. Other release branches were not checked for these cave rules. Return to the Mielon project hub for project and installation context; this is separate from official Dungeons II geography.
