Trill in The Sift: Flying Screen Effect & Name Origin

Trill is a tiny flying screen effect in Dungeons II’s Sift. Marc Watson explained why it received a real name; groups of the effects decorate the sky rather than acting as interactive mobs.

Identify the tiny flying effect

Trills are the small fly-like effects seen in groups across the Sift’s sky. The Trill record shows blue, yellow, and pink appearances.

Why Trill has a name

In his August 24 developer post, Marc Watson explained that the little fly was a screen effect below the level of an ambient mob. He asked for it to receive a real creature name, resulting in Trill.

The Wiki classifies Trills as particles that do not interact with other entities.

Compare scenery with quest creatures

If the scene instead shows a creature that a hero can pick up, compare the Tuner guide. For a hide-and-seek quest involving color-changing creatures, use Wobble. The Sift mob directory keeps these different kinds of inhabitants together for identification.

Distinguish flight from an attack effect

A Trill flock is also different from the projectiles fired by the Sentinel. Sentinel darts originate from a hostile creature’s head-shaking attack, turn toward a hero, and then continue on a straight path. Watching where an effect begins and whether a creature is attacking helps separate the two in busy footage.
