Can Switch 1 play Minecraft Dungeons 2?

Yes. Minecraft Dungeons 2 released on the original Nintendo Switch as well as Switch 2. Mojang’s launch announcement names both systems, and Nintendo maintains a separate original Switch product listing with the September 29, 2026 release date.

You do not need to buy Switch 2 solely to have an officially listed version of Dungeons 2. The game’s Sift adventure belongs to the base game on its supported platforms. Nintendo’s US launch notice lists the original Switch version’s regular standard price as $29.99, checked October 2, 2026.

Use the original Switch listing

Check the product’s system label before purchasing. Nintendo’s original Switch listing has these details:

Detail Published original Switch support
System Nintendo Switch
Single system 1–4 players
Local wireless 1–4 players
Online 2–4 players
Play modes Handheld, tabletop and TV
Listed compatible controller Nintendo Switch Pro Controller
Download size 4.3 GB on the UK listing checked October 2

Nintendo also states that multiplayer requires one compatible controller per player. Original Switch specification. Prepare the actual compatible inputs for your group; a statement that a controller is compatible does not imply that every alternative layout is supported.

Download size changes with packages and updates. The number above is the dated UK product-page value, not a promise that your console’s final installed footprint will always match it.

Switch 1 versus Switch 2

Both Nintendo versions have the same published player-count categories, but they are separately labeled system releases. The current UK listings show different download sizes: 4.3 GB for Switch and 6.0 GB for Switch 2. Switch listing · Switch 2 listing.

Those listings do not give this site a measured FPS, resolution, load-time comparison or a tested save-transfer workflow between the two Nintendo releases. Choose your system’s product page and review any upgrade offer there rather than assuming a free upgrade or identical performance. See the Switch 2 guide for that version’s published setup.

Online play and cross-progression

Online Nintendo play requires Nintendo Switch Online and a Nintendo Account. Local couch and local-wireless support are separate entries in the listing. For an online cross-platform party, the Dungeons 2 party-code method lets friends join from other supported platforms. Use the multiplayer guide to count the four heroes and choose the correct hero mode.

Nintendo says this game does not support Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud backup. Mojang separately says an online hero follows platform accounts linked to the same Microsoft account. Keep those services distinct: online cross-progression is not the Nintendo cloud-backup feature. Nintendo save notice · Mojang's online hero explanation.

Offline and online heroes use separate modes. If you intend to carry progression into online sessions on another supported platform, begin with the linked account and online hero mode rather than treating an offline campaign as a temporary login workaround.
