Choose the entrance your story has unlocked
The Sift in Minecraft Dungeons 2 is reached through story rifts and the Ancient City’s Deep Dark portal. The early rift visit and the later repaired ancient portal are different campaign stages. Seeing the dimension once does not mean the large portal is already ready for travel.
For an ordinary Java or Bedrock world, start with current availability. The route below belongs to the released Minecraft Dungeons II campaign. Mielon’s music sequence is a separate community-mod mechanic.
First visit through a story rift
The published access walkthrough records the first visit through an early story rift during the investigation of the Illager High Council. Enter when the active objective directs you into it, clear the encounter, and continue back to the Overworld as the story asks.
This is a short introduction to the dimension. If you have already done it and are now facing the closed Ancient City portal, continue the main quest chain rather than returning to the initial rift to search for a hidden unlock.
Complete Down into the Deep Dark
The main Deep Dark route begins through a surface cave entrance in Howling Woods. The current Wiki quest record gives the following progression:
- Enter the Deep Dark and traverse the caves.
- Get through the Illager defences and keep searching deeper.
- Navigate the amethyst geode and descend the abyss.
- Defeat the Warden, then continue toward the deeper gate.
- Open the gate and defeat the Twisted Warden.
- Check on the trapped Echo Golem.
The environment contains bridges over pits, water, falling stalactites, crumbling floors, and Illager camps. The amethyst geode is a mid-route landmark; the Ancient City and its large portal lie deeper in the network.
The Warden and Twisted Warden are separate encounters in this objective list. For the portal-guarding battle, use the Twisted Warden attack guide. After winning, speak to the trapped golem so that the story can move into the missing-note-block problem.
Recover the missing Note Blocks
The Note Block Machine stands on the platform in front of the Deep Dark portal. Collecting the missing blocks is a campaign objective, with the Overworld search leading through Rainy Plains and Frozen Highlands before Returning the Note Blocks.
The Wiki records the green Note Block at the Supreme Evoker’s Tower. Wading Rainy Plains takes you through the tower and the Copper Monstrosity encounter. Follow the active main quest through the remaining recovery objectives and Hiking Frozen Highlands, where the Prime Enchanter is fought.
Use the quest’s displayed recovery count and objective markers for the pickups. The older Note Block Machine Wiki revision describes three missing blocks, while current published campaign accounts describe two; the practical unlock is completing the recovery quest shown in your game, then starting Returning the Note Blocks.
Activate the Note Block Machine and enter
The game-data objective record for Returning the Note Blocks, snapshot 1.1.1.0, gives this final sequence:
- Return to Brave Haven.
- Speak to the Cartographer.
- Reach the Deep Dark tunnel.
- Return to the ancient portal.
- Activate the portal.
- Enter the portal.
The machine’s completed melody and the Echo Golems’ activation sequence reopen the gateway. Note Block Virtuoso tracks activating the machine; Brave the Unknown tracks entering The Sift. The source describes an activation cutscene after the missing blocks are returned. It does not supply a requirement to manually tune eight blocks during this campaign step.
If you are looking at an eight-button launcher code, check its context: the pre-release launcher puzzle and a mod’s portal song are different tasks. Completing a web or launcher puzzle is not a substitute for Returning the Note Blocks in your campaign.
When the portal stays closed
| What you are seeing | Check next |
|---|---|
| A story rift you have not entered | The active main objective pointing to that rift |
| A closed ancient portal after Twisted Warden | The Echo Golem conversation and missing Note Block quest |
| Collected blocks but no open ancient portal | Cartographer dialogue and Returning the Note Blocks |
| A musical gate deeper in The Sift | Its local quest and Tuner requirement; this is a different gate |
Use fast travel to return to an activated Deep Dark entrance station and quests to identify your current campaign task. Once inside, read Sift Tides before spending soul-powered abilities, or return to the Dungeons II overview.
